We had nothing planned for the day, so Keisuke, Yuki and I headed up to Maizuru to visit the Maizuru-kou Tore Tore Center. Basically it is fish market. Lots and lots of fresh fish.
Maizuru itself was an important port for both the Russo-Japan war and world wars. Yuki's grandfather used it several times during his tours of duty in Asia.
However, back to the fish. The route there took us past an interchange to Obama...
The market itself was actually smaller than I expected. I imagined fisherman tossing fresh fish around dripping in sea water and covered in kelp. Not quite.
However, the spread of fresh fish was amazing.
The haggling of the fisherman with the land lubbers over the price of their goods was also entertaining. Yuki gave one gentlemen quite a challenge then walked away once he wouldn't give. Then again, he also wanted $100 for a single crab...
Some vendors grilled right at their stall. This squid was one of the best I have ever had.
Super tender, crisped over hardwood charcoal, some mysterious sauce from a big unlabeled bucket applied with a paint brush. Fantastic.
The market also has an attached restaurant famous for their fresh fish dishes.
I had the uni (sea urchin) and tuna bowl...
For the price and what you see above I can't recommend this place to eat. The market is great, but don't get fooled into thinking the restaurant is anything more than a tourist trap.
We decided to take a quick road trip to the coast instead of heading right back home.
End of the road.
This was the closest to the Sea of Japan I've been so far. Unfortunately I couldn't see either Russia or North Korea from here...
Thanks to Keisuke for driving us around all day.
