We decided to go check out the Osaka Castle illumination. There was still plenty of time in the day, so our route took us through Hankyu Department Store.
These mega stores never cease to amaze me. Shopping upon shopping upon shopping... and more shopping. The floor index gives you a good idea of what is available. The B2 floor is my favorite - filled with all sorts of meats, vegetables, and alcohol.
And the crowds... so many people crammed into so little space. Osaka has a population density of 31,077 people per square mile. That's higher than New York, the most dense US city. While Chicago and Osaka have a similar population (~2.6 million), the area populated in Chicago is 228 square miles in comparison to only 86 square miles in Osaka. Needless to say, things can feel a bit crowded.
On the way out of Hankyu we strolled by the shogatsu kazari, new year's decorations, on display.
Eventually we made our way to Osaka castle via the Tanimachi Line. After strolling by the impressive NHK Osaka building, Osaka castle came into view.
Ends up the illumination is a combination of Christmas lights, timers, and video...
Finally, a shot of Osaka Castle in all of its glory...
As impressive as Osaka Castle can be, don't waste your money on the illumination. Just go for the regular tour. Youtube has enough video that should satisfy any desire to see an illustrated castle.
